In Desperate Need

The supermarket had run out of clothes that fit and that Minnie liked. She realized her only option left was the Aurora Mall, even though there was rumored to be a large, dangerous shadow living in it. She took her bow and arrows, and now stood in front of the huge building, staring up at the faded letters that read "AURORA MALL."

The British girl's chest moved up and down as she took deep breaths. Her knuckles were white as she held on to her bow tightly. She knew where all the clothing stores were, but she had no idea what dangers would meet her. More than half the lights were bound to be out inside. Taking one last breath, Minnie pushed open the front door, entering hesitantly.

The shadow of a man was hidden in the dark roof beams of the mall. He had a sword, which was dripping with the blood of the body behind him. He saw the girl, and grinned, kicking the body down at her. Though, a nanosecond later, he disappeared.

Not a second after the door shut, Minnie heard something that sounded like a body being dragged, but it lasted only a moment. Quickly glancing around, she saw something above her, but it was to late; the body landed on her, causing her knees to buckle and make her fall to the ground. Blood from the other person dripped down onto Minnie's face, making her stomach gurgle. Using all her strength, the girl pushed the dead body off and rolled away.

She sat for a moment, her eyes wide, staring up at the spot the trap had come from. The girl could feel her heart pounding in her chest, but this wasn't something that would slow her down. It told her she needed to move faster. Instantly, Minnie was back on her feet, moving along the walls, deeper into the dark mall.

Deep in, there were nightcrawlers picking at bodies and trash. Two were fighting over a rotten apple, trying to impale each other with 2 foot long sharp claws. Hunters ran around the fountains with great speed.

Minnie rounded a corner and saw the shadows.
The easiest ones to pick off would be the nightcrawlers, she thought to herself. Silently and slowly, the teenage girl drew back an arrow, taking careful aim. Once her sights were lined up, she released the arrow. It went straight through one nightcrawler's chest and hit the other's arm.

The nightcrawler disappeared and the other shrieked. Immediately, the shadows all turned to her position, and started to run at her.

"Well, I did not think this through," Minnie murmured to herself. She whirled around, gazing around for a safe spot before sprinting into a nearby dress shop. She raced to the back, entering one of the fitting rooms and shutting the door. With her back pressed hard against the slated door, she glanced around, her eyes wide and heart racing.
This is the end... There was no visible escape.

Suddenly, a ceiling tile was moved above her. "Hey!" a deep voice hissed. "Up here! Quickly!"
A pale arm extended from the darkness, ready to help her up.

Minnie jumped when the voice called to her. She didn't want to go with some stranger, but she knew she was better off fighting a person than she was fighting several shadows. Reluctantly, she took the hand that had been extended to her. She was surprised by the coolness of it, but didn't question it.

The stranger, with quite a lot of strength, hauled her up. In between the floors was a maintenance hall. it was pitch black at the moment, so the girl could not see his eyes.

Once she had been hauled up, Minnie stopped, crouched by the hole in the ceiling. Stars popped in front of her eyes, and she felt blind; the room below her had been bright, but now there was no light at all. She nearly lost her balance, almost falling down again before managing to catch herself.

"Follow me." said the man. He took her hand and put it on his shoulder so that she could find her way through the area. He could see in the dark, and it was not because his eyes were used to it.

Minnie started when she felt the person put her hand on his shoulder, but something told her he knew the way out. Assuming his eyes were accustomed to the dark, she followed him, making sure not to remove her hand from his shoulder.

Soon, he stopped. "Here. The way out." he said, lifting a tile for her to jump in. The room below was dark as well.

Preparing herself, Minnie lowered down the hole, and then dropped onto the floor below, her knees almost buckling beneath her. She immediately moved over for the guy to drop down.

But the room she was in had snarling in the corner. Nightcrawlers surrounded her from all sides, snarling. The man laughed, bringing down the tile. There was no way she could get back up alive.

Minnie froze. She could hear the shadows around her growling, and her immediate reaction was to fight them, but common sense part of her brain knew it was useless. The girl simply stood there, gazing around, wondering if her racing heart would get a break that day.

Suddenly, a door behind the nightcrawlers exploded open. In the next seconds, which seemed to go by in slow motion, knives flew through the air as well as another blade. After the seconds were done, a boy and a girl, Aleks and Alice Delroy, stood in front of her, panting. The shadows had all been killed. Alice had started to gather her ballistic knives, and Aleks extended a hand, covered by a black fingerless glove. "Have we met?" he huffed, regaining his breath.

Minnie's mouth had dropped. Her brain was slowly beginning to not comprehend what was going on. When Aleks extended his hand, hesitantly, she took and shook it. She shook her head slowly, still shocked by what had happened.

"Oh, I am sure we have." he said, trying to get her to remember the time she aimed her bow at a girl, and a shadow almost attacked her. "Dumb girl." he said, repeating what he had called her that time. Alice popped up from collecting her weapons. "Oh, that must have been terrible! You should come back with us!" she exclaimed, gripping her knives as she tried to put herself in the girl's shoes. "My brother and I saw you disappear into the mall, so we followed you."

Instantly, Minnie snapped back to her senses. She took her hand back and narrowed her hazel eyes at Aleks.
"I remember perfectly well, thank you," she snarled. Turning to Alice, the British girl nodded her thank you. "If you hadn't, I'm sure I would have been dead now."

"Well I like your 'thank you.'" murmured Aleks. "And to think I was going to offer you food and shelter as well."
Alice went to elbow Aleks, but he opened his palm, catching it. It sent a shock up her elbow, and she winced. "Owww...." she murmured, rubbing her elbow with a pain-filled expression.

Minnie looked confused for a moment, but a distant noise distracted her.
"We should leave," she suggested.

"Ohoho, or what? A giant monster will burst through the wall?" asked Aleks, throwing his arm up to point to the wall behind them. Suddenly, though, before she could answer, a giant monster burst through the wall.

Without hesitating, Minnie glared at Aleks and ran from the room. As she went she drew her bow and an arrow, glancing over her shoulder to see if the monster was pursuing them.
